OnePlus 5 owners can now take advantage of the best feature of the OnePlus 5T.

OnePlus has brought its new facial recognition feature to the seven-month-old smartphone.

The smartphone, launched back in June 2017, was superseded by the OnePlus 5T, back in November.

OnePlus 5T shipped with Face Unlock, which allows users to unlock the handset simply by looking at it.

With the OnePlus 5T, the company relocated the fingerprint scanner to the back of the phone to make way for the 6.01inch AMOLED display.

Face Unlock was added to the phone so owners could easily – and securely – unlock the OnePlus 5T when it is resting on a flat surface.

OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei confirmed the functionality would be coming to the OnePlus 5 in a tweet late last year.

Face Unlock allows users to simply double tap the screen, look into the camera, and smoothly access their phone in seconds.

In fact, OnePlus boasts that their advanced facial recognition software takes less than 0.4 seconds to scan a face.

The firm also states that Face Unlock will even recognise a users whether they are wearing a hat or glasses.

Unfortunately, data-sensitive apps, like mobile banking or password managers, won’t work without the fingerprint scanner or correct PIN.

Unlike the iPhone X, which uses a dot projector that emits 30,000 infrared beams onto the face to authenticate the identity of the person holding the smartphone – the OnePlus 5T does not use any specific sensors.

OnePlus is simply leveraging the front-facing selfie camera to identify your face, which is the same camera module used on its predecessor, OnePlus 5.

According to the Chinese smartphone company, it uses over 100 unique identifiers to correctly identify who is looking at the device.

OnePlus also says it does everything within its power to ensure the subject looking at the smartphone is alive, building in a number of features to beat selfies from screens.

OnePlus has brought its facial recognition technology to last year’s flagship phone

OnePlus also says it does everything within its power to ensure the subject looking at the smartphone is alive, building in a number of features to beat selfies from screens.

It says, “In an upcoming update, the phone will understand whether the subject is emitting light (a phone) versus reflecting (your actual face) by analysing shadows and bright areas.

“Other current checks related to this particular scenario is to look for screen reflections, the presence of a square element (shape of the phone) and more.

“We are dedicated to constantly optimising Face Unlock, much like we do with OxygenOS as a whole, and this is but one example.”

Face Unlock arrives on the OnePlus 5 with a slew of other features, including enhanced Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) for video footage.
