Aamir Khan’s Secret Superstar bounced back to top spot at the Chinese box office in what was the quietest cinema-going weekend for over a year.
The Indian drama scored US$10.5mil (RM41.1mil) between Feb 2-4, according to data from Ent Group. It replaced Maze Runner: The Death Cure as the top film.
That outcome nevertheless lifted the 17-day total for Secret Superstar to US$89.9mil (RM351.9mil). While it has no chance of getting near the US$190mil (RM743.7mil) China total of Aamir’s Dangal, the Chinese score for Secret Superstar is more than four times its US$20.3mil (RM79.4mil) rest of the world performance.
Superstar scored strongest on Saturday and Sunday (Feb 3-4), having been beaten on Friday, the second day of release for newcomer Till The End Of The World. An action-adventure set in the Antarctic, Till The End Of The World released on Friday. It scored US$9.91mil (RM38.8mil) between Friday and Sunday and finished with a four-day cumulative of US$11.5mil (RM45mil).
Secret Superstar revolves around 14-year-old Insia who is very passionate about singing. But, her conservative father is totally against her getting involved in the music scene.
Keeping her identity a secret, Insia starts to post her songs on the internet, which quickly become hits catching the attention of people from the music industry including the flamboyant music director Shakti Kumar (Aamir).
Actress Zaira Wasim, last seen in Dangal, plays the lead role here.
